What do RICS members do?

Steve Phillips MRICS, 56, is general director of the State Opera of South Australia.

What does your job involve?
The job title 'general director' encompasses the roles of general manager and artistic director. I also manage the company’s artistic administration, as well as fundraising and sponsorship activities.

What are your views on RICS?
I think RICS is an outstanding organisation, which reaches out to its many members worldwide. I feel very proud to be a member.

Describe a typical working day
A typical day might include managing artistic issues (casting, auditioning, programming, forward planning and artistic policy); reporting to the board, government and stakeholders; risk management; project management of special events and meeting sponsors; as well as general management duties.

What do you find the most interesting part of your work?
For me the most rewarding part of my job is being part of the creative process that comes with a new production. The planning cycles and rehearsal scheduling is challenging but stimulating.
To see a production come together after six years of planning (as was the case for the first Australian production of Wagner's Ring Cycle late last year) was exhausting but ultimately very satisfying.

What project has given you the greatest satisfaction to date?
The establishment of the 'Opera Studio' in 1996, which provides a venue for younger South Australian singers, directors, designers and musicians to develop professionally.

What are your plans and ambitions for the future?
I am continuing to plan the company's activities for the next two years and have a three-year contract in place. I am committed to opera in this state and will continue to do what I can to promote the company's profile and reputation.
