The School of the Built Environment at Northumbria University is one of the UK's leading providers of higher education relating to the design, development and management of property and construction.
Teaching quality
Situated in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumbria’s School of the Built Environment has been providing surveying education for over forty years. The teaching quality is excellent, achieving a ‘score’ of 52/54 in the 2006 Periodic Review of Teaching Quality.
The School’s well established links with industry helps to ensure that programmes are relevant and graduates are well prepared to match the demands of their chosen career. The programmes are taught by experienced staff who have made a career in the profession before entering academia, an essential factor in maintaining the very high levels of graduate employability.
Residential field study, site visits, live case studies and guest lecturers are an integral part of the School's programmes, all designed to support the development of a successful career in the built environment professions.
Learning facilities
As part of its continuing investment into learning resources, the school has recently opened a virtual environment facility which is used by staff and students for design exploration and presentations. The large screen allows students to see designs from multiple view points and to navigate through space in real time. The system enables interaction with three-dimensional computer generated models of buildings, sites and urban spaces and provides the opportunity of 'being immersed' in a simulated environment.
A strength of the school is the staff-student interaction, teaching staff operate and open door policy and are readily accessible in their offices around the HUB, the School’s dedicated learning resource centre. Students also benefit from the School being a stone's throw from the City Campus Library containing books, journals and networked PCs to access dedicated on-line resources such as databases and electronic publications.
Placement opportunities
The School supports students wishing to take up opportunities of professional placements. Professional placements give students the opportunity to apply and develop the knowledge and skills which they have gained on their programme as well as the chance to draw upon real work experience in their final year.
Graduate employment
The School prides itself on the high success rates of graduates obtaining employment, and supports them in developing career opportunities in this sector. Graduates of the School are now working in senior positions all over the world and the very sizeable alumni are a most valuable network. At the 2006 Periodic Review of Teaching employers agreed ‘the only significant problem with graduates of the School of the Built Environment was that there weren’t enough of them’.
Areas of study
The school has a wide range of undergraduate provision which can be viewed in detail on www.northumbria.ac.uk/be
There are also some cutting edge postgraduate programmes which draw upon staff research, development and consultancy activities, essential to maintaining the academic wealth of the school. Central to this post graduate opportunity are the flagship MSc programmes in Real Estate and Project Management both of which are RICS partnership accredited.
In 2006 the school launched web-based Distance Learning Masters Programmes in the surveying disciplines. Up to date learning materials are delivered via the web and access to staff is available through e mail and on on-line discussion groups. The format allows students to graduate into surveying whilst working anywhere in the world.
The school warmly welcomes proposals from students wishing to pursue high level research and doctoral programmes.
